Pot-8-os (* 1773; November 1800), also spelled Potoooooooo or Pot8o, was a well-known racehorse of the 18th century. He won over 30 races and was a sought-after and successful stallion in his later life. His descendants include Waxy and Whalebone , who both won the championship for sire horses in England and Ireland .

The unusual name goes back to a mix-up. The stallion was supposed to be called Potatoes, but the stable boy in charge misunderstood the name and wrote Potoooooooo on his feed box. Abingdon, the colt's breeder, was so amused by this that he kept the name but shortened it to Pot-8-os or Pot8os. In the General Stud Book , however, the stallion is listed under the name Potoooooooo.

ancestry

Pot-8-os is descended in direct paternal line from Darley Arabian . He is one of the founding fathers of the English thoroughbred . Darley Arabian was exported from Syria to England in 1704 by the merchant Thomas Darley and was used as a sire by the Darley family at the Aldby Park , Buttercrambe estate . Flying Childers is one of his most successful sons , whose racing success also made his full brother Bleeding Childers (also called Bartlett's Childers) a sought-after stallion. Bleeding Childer's descendants include the exceptional horse Eclipse , the direct sire of Pot-8-os.

On the paternal and maternal side, there is another founding father of the English thoroughbred in the ancestry of Pot-8-o. Godolphin Arabian belongs to a group of horses that the Bey of Tunis gave to the French King Louis XV. gave. The stallion was evidently not very popular at the French court and came into the possession of the Englishman Edward Coke, who took him over as a stallion for his stud in Derbyshire .

Racehorse

Pot-8-os probably ran a total of 40 races from 1776 to 1783 and won between 28 and 34 of them. Most of the races are races over a distance of four miles, which were held in Newmarket, which is important for English racing . He won his first race at Newmarket when he was three. In 1777 he finished second in a race at New Market that only allowed four-year-olds. He finished third in a race in Nottingham and fifth in the Great Subscription Purse in York.

In 1778 he won the 1200 Guineas Stakes in Newmarket. As the stallion got off to a bad start in this race, his breeder Abingdon sold the stallion to Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor, for 1500 guineas during the race . The stallion won a number of other races during the year. This continued from 1779 to 1781. He won the Gold Cup in 1779, won the Clermont Cup as a walkover and a little later the October Cup. In 1781 he won the Jockey Club Plate and the Whip, both as walkovers. In October 1781, 85 guineas was paid to its owner so that the 140 guineas subscription purse would not start. In 1782 he won the Clermont Cub, the Jockey Club Plate for the third time and was successful in the Craven Stakes, in which 13 other mostly younger horses had started. In 1783, at the age of 10, he again won the Whip in New Market, but lost a match race against Assassin and another race.

Stallion

From 1784 Pot-8-os no longer ran, but was used as a sire at Oxcroft Farm near Balsham, Cambridgeshire . Most of the mares he was paired with belonged to the Earl of Grosvenor. A stud fee of 5 guineas was initially taken from other breeders, which was then gradually increased to 21 guineas. From 1796 he stood on Upper Hare Park near Newmarket. Pot-8-os is the father of 172 race winners who together won a total of £ 61,871. The following horses are among his most important offspring:

Champion, son of Pot-8-os
  • Nightshade (* 1785), winner of the Oaks Stakes in 1788
  • Asparagus (1787), a successful racehorse and father of Rhoda , the winner of the 1000 Guinea of 1816
  • Waxy (1790), who won the Derby in 1793, among others . Waxy was champion of sire horses in England and Ireland in 1810 and has played an important role in the fact that the sire line of Eclipse and Darley Arabian still plays such an important role in the breeding of the English thoroughbred today.
  • Sister to Edwin (1794), important broodmare.
  • Champion (1797), the first racehorse to win both the Derby and St. Leger Stakes .
  • Tyrant (1799), Derby winner 1782
  • Parasol (1800), a mare who won numerous races and from which winners such as Pindarrie ( 2000 Guineas ) and Pastille (Oaks and 2000 Guineas) emerged
  • Mandane (1800), important broodmare. Influential racehorses such as Manuella (1812 Oaks Stakes ), Altisidora (St. Leger), Lottery ( Doncaster Cup ) and Brutandorf ( Chester Cup ) descend from her.
