The Potkański Palace (Polish: Pałac “Na Podkańskiem” ) is located in Warsaw's inner city district at 44 ulica Długa . Today it is used by the University of Warsaw . 100 meters east on the same side of the street is the larger palace facing the four winds .

history

Originally there was a smaller mansion of the Płock bishop Jan Gębicki on the site of today's palace building . Between 1771 and 1773 the abbot of Sulejów , Stanisław Potkański, had Domenico Merlini build his Warsaw residence here. The building was already being used as a tenement house at the end of the 18th century; there were six shops on the first floor. Smaller rental buildings, sheds and sheds were built on the large property. In 1860 a spiral staircase was added to the inner courtyard side to make it easier for tenants to access the upper floors.

At the end of the 19th century, Jewish tenants increasingly moved into the building until they were forcibly relocated to the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940 . In 1911 the eastern development of the inner courtyard was replaced by a new rental building by the architect Stefan Szyller (from then on No. 46). At about the same time, a building for Edward Ahrends was built on the west side (from then no. 42). In 1943, the German SS discovered a resistance printing press in the basement of the Cegłowski joinery. Several dozen people were executed in a row.

During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the building burned down completely. In 1955 the middle section was rebuilt. The formerly longest balcony in Warsaw, which previously ran across the entire street facade, was not added again. In 1992 and 1993 the facade was restored. Today the palace houses the Dean's Office of the Economics Faculty of Warsaw University ( Wydział Nauk Ekonomicznych Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego ).
