history
The company was founded in 1971 by Walter Powell as an antiquarian bookshop . Together with his son Michael Powell, who joined the management of Powell's Books in 1979, he developed a business concept that u. a. intended to expand the previous range to include brand-new books and to offer used and new books side by side on the shelf.
In 1982 Michael Powell took over the bookstore from his father. Under his leadership, the company began setting up branches. In 1984 Powell's second office opened in a mall in Beaverton , seven miles west of Portland.
