The St. Marien monastery (also St. Marien monastery , Latin monasterium Santae Mariae ) was a monastery of the Premonstratensians in Leitzkau in what is now Saxony-Anhalt from the 12th to the 16th century.

location

The monastery was initially located in Leitzkau at the St. Petri Church and was moved to the mountain near Leitzkau in 1155 , where a St. Mary's Church was built. Remnants of this are still present.

history

The monastery was founded at an unknown date, probably after 1138, at the St. Petri Church . The first canons came from the Premonstratensian Monastery of Our Dear Women in Magdeburg . In one of the years before 1150, nine canons were sent to Brandenburg , which was then dominated by Slavs , and founded the Premonstratensian monastery at St. Gotthardt Church in Parduin.

In 1155 the Leitzkauer Stift was moved to the mountain near the settlement and consecrated on September 7th by Archbishop Wichmann of Magdeburg in the presence of Margrave Albrecht the Bear and his family. In 1161 it elected the new bishop Wilmar , who then went to the newly consecrated cathedral in Brandenburg in 1165. This was connected with a further loss of importance of the Leitzkau Convention. However, this initially retained the right to participate in the election of bishops and in the 13th century elected two opposing bishops.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the Brandenburg bishop complained to the Pope about the neglect of the canons' way of life. In 1535, Bishop Matthias von Jagow asked the Pope to dissolve the monastery, in which five members still lived at that time. Soon after, it was abolished and became worldly property.

Structures

The convent was headed by a provost . This was supported by a prior , a subprior and other officials. The provost was also Archdeacon von Leitzkau. The number of canons has not been passed down, but it may have been over ten at least at times.

The monastery owned extensive land in the area and had patronage rights in some churches. In the 15th century it had a house each in Wittenberg and Zerbst .
