from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boje E. Hans Schmuhl (born January 18, 1950 in Penzlin ) is a German ethnographer . In 1990 he was a CDU member of the People's Chamber of the GDR and most recently General Director of the Dome and Palaces Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt .

life and work

Boje Schmuhl attended the ten-class polytechnic high school in his birthplace Penzlin from 1956 to 1966. He then completed his Abitur with vocational training in Schwerin from 1966 to 1969 . After completing basic military service, he studied from 1971 to 1974 at the specialist school for museologists in Leipzig , where he graduated as a graduate ethnographer. After working in various museums in the GDR, including Greifswald , Stralsund and Osterburg , Schmuhl worked full-time for some time in the CDU district association in Neubrandenburg. On March 1, 1988 Schmuhl was appointed director of the State Luther Hall in Lutherstadt Wittenberg . After German reunification, Schmuhl gave up the leadership of the Lutherhalle and switched to the government of the newly founded state of Saxony-Anhalt. In the newly created Ministry of Culture, Schmuhl headed the culture department as ministerial director.

After the state government of Saxony-Anhalt decided on January 16, 1996 to set up the “Foundation for palaces, castles and gardens of the State of Saxony-Anhalt”, Schmuhl was appointed to its full-time executive board. The "Domstiftung", founded a little later, was also headed by Schmuhl as a board member based in Schloss Leitzkau . After the two foundations merged to form the Dome und Schlösser Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt , Schmuhl remained its director. After reaching the age of 65, he retired on February 1, 2015 as Director General of the Foundation. Until 2015 Boje Schmuhl was also an assessor on the board of the World Heritage Association on Saale and Unstrut.

Political commitment

Schmuhl joined the CDU in 1968 at the age of 18. During the time of political change in the GDR, as director of the State Luther Hall, he organized the round table of Lutherstadt Wittenberg within its walls. In November 1989 he was elected CDU district chairman of the Wittenberg district. A little later Schmuhl also became a member of the CDU party executive. At the first free elections in the GDR on March 18, 1990, Schmuhl ran for the CDU in the Halle constituency on list position 5. The CDU won 19 seats in the electoral district and thus Schmuhl moved into the last GDR parliament as a CDU member . During his time as a member of the Volkskammer in May 1990, Schmuhl headed a delegation of six members who represented the GDR at the 42nd session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. On May 7, 1990, the GDR was granted special guest status by the Council of Europe. At the end of Schmuhl's parliamentary activity, he was confronted with the issue of Stasi cooperation. However, the People's Chamber's temporary examination committee to check the MPs for Stasi involvement classified him in the lowest category 6: Entry as IM is proven in the card index, but after inspection of the files there are no sufficient reasons for recommending resignation.
