Dissecting course

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The dissection course (from Latin : praeparare, "to prepare" ), often referred to by the students as the "prep course" for short, is a regular part of the pre-clinical medical training in the course of macroscopic anatomy . Preparation courses are also offered for other medical professions or are part of advanced medical training.

In the dissection prepare the students under the guidance and supervision of lecturers and taxidermists with a fixative fixed corpses . Fixed corpses are preserved , but since the original state is preserved at the time of the fixation , the term “fixed” is used instead of “preserved”. The type of fixing solution used depends on the purpose. So there are z. B. movable preparations for surgeons in training and continuing education to create a realistic situation for the doctor .

The decision to bequeath her remains to an anatomical institute is made by the body donors during their lifetime. A body donation is not a fixed contract, which can be revoked at any time. The body donors and their surviving dependents usually do not receive any money or the like for this donation, but there are differences depending on the institute as to which services the institute takes over based on the donation. At the Hannover Medical School, for example, the body donors have to pay the costs for transportation and burial with the help of an earmarked donation, while the Ruhr University in Bochum assumes these costs.

The aim of the course is to impart comprehensive knowledge of macroscopic anatomy . Since it is only with this knowledge that it is possible to really understand the various body functions, the course is an important basis for understanding clinical relationships. During the course, not only should theoretical content be worked out, but the material should also be learned practically through literal “understanding”. The students should pay special attention to the variations in anatomy, which are not always detailed in a textbook. The course of the veins in a forearm will often look slightly different from what is stated in the textbook. These variations, which can be completely physiological, can usually only be recorded in this comprehensive form in the dissection course. The dissecting course also conveys social and ethical skills that are often neglected in discussions about the importance of the course for studies. At no other point in time during the course do students have such access to the actual anatomy.

In addition, the students usually have the opportunity to learn on more specific preparations in the course of the dissection course. Dry preparations , wet preparations , maceration preparations , injection preparations , PEG preparations and plastinates (permanent preparations) are often available.
