President Herwig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The President Herwig was one of the first seaworthy German fish steamers of the late 19th century.

After the Sagitta , the President Herwig was built as the second ship for the entrepreneurial founder of German deep-sea fishing , the fish merchant and shipowner Friedrich Busse (1835–98), at the FW Wencke shipyard in Bremerhaven, based on the English model. It was named after the administrative lawyer and sponsor of the deep-sea fishery Walther Herwig , after whom the German fishery research vessels are still named today.

The President Herwig was the first ship in the new deep-sea fishing fleet of the imperial era, which was lost in the North Atlantic off the coast of Iceland in 1898 . It is also discussed by Gorch Fock in his book Seafaring is Necessary! mentioned.

The President-Herwig-Straße at the old fishing port of Cuxhaven commemorates the lost ship and its namesake.

Today the memorial stone Iceland fishing on the coast near Vík í Mýrdal commemorates the 83 German fishing steamers that sank off the coast of Iceland with over 1,200 seamen and fishermen .
