history

The oldest known evidence of the existence of organized fishermen and fishmongers' guilds dates back to 1106 and concerns the guild of fishmongers in Worms . At that time, the city presented the guild certificate to 23 fishmongers for their guild for the exclusive and perishable sale of fish. Simon Petrus is the patron saint of fishmongers. His name day is June 29th . The apostle Andrew , whose name day is November 30th, is also the patron saint of the fishmongers. Mary (mother of Jesus) , whose name day is September 8th , is the patroness of the sea fish traders. The figure of a fishmonger is used as part of the Christmas crib . Notorious were the Loitz (family) from Greifswald , who built up a fish trading empire in Stettin in the 15th and 16th centuries . Today the Loitzenhaus in Stettin houses the city's art college.
