Prèsa di San Carlo was a village in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland , fraction of the former municipality of Bignasco .

geography

The ruins of Prèsa di San Carlo are at the far end of the Bavona valley north of San Carlo . Today they belong to the municipality of Cevio and are easily accessible from the road in a few minutes. The place was abandoned in the 16th century because rockslides and avalanches made it uninhabitable. As part of the Bignasco faction , Prèsa is listed in the inventory of places worthy of protection in Switzerland .

Village

restored houses

The village consisted of around a dozen buildings, almost all of which have fallen apart. Some walls have been preserved. Two houses have been restored and re-equipped with doors. They are not locked and can be entered. The fireplaces are clearly visible.

church

The small church with pictures of the original frescoes from 1514 has also been preserved or restored. The oldest is the church tower, which was built in the 14th century. A dendrochronological examination showed that the ceiling beams were knocked down in 1345. The chapel itself was built at the beginning of the 16th century; the beams date from 1513/14. The frescoes by an unknown painter also date from this period. Prèsa.

In the first half of the 16th century, after the village had already been abandoned, the church was restored. In 1975, after an avalanche went down, the entrance area collapsed in a stream that passed right next to the church. The debris was removed the following year and the roof was repaired. After further avalanches and debris flows, the stream was relocated north in 1993 to prevent further damage. In 1996 the frescoes were restored, removed and taken to the Church of San Carlo, where they can be seen today.
