Pramod Pandurang Sawant (born April 24, 1973 in Kothambi, North Goa District , India ) is an Indian politician. He has been the Chief Minister of Goa since March 19, 2019 .

biography

Pramod Sawant was born the son of Pandurang and Padmini Sawant in the small town of Kothambi ( Taluk Bicholim) in the northern district of Goa. He attended the Ayurvedic Medical College of the Ganga Education Society in Kolhapur , where he earned a bachelor's degree in Ayurveda , Medicine and Surgery (BAMS). He then continued his studies at Tilak Maharashtra University in Pune and graduated with a Master of Social Work (MSW). He then worked as a doctor for Ayurvedic medicine at the state hospital in Mapusa (Goa).

Pramod's father was already active in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and later in the successor party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The son was early active in the RSS and later in the BJP. He was temporarily president of the BJP youth organization Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Goa and national vice president of the BJYM. Under the influence of the then BJP chairman in Goa and later Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar , who later developed into a mentor to Sawants, he entered Goan politics in 2008. On November 26, 2008 Sawant stood in the by-election to the Parliament of Goa in the constituency 17-Pale , but was defeated by his opponent candidate from the Congress Party. In the following Goanese parliamentary elections in 2012 and 2017, Sawant was able to win the constituency 17-Sanquelim and then worked as a member of parliament. From 2012 to 2018 he was a member of various parliamentary committees (including petitions committee, public companies, economic affairs, etc.) and from March 22, 2017 to March 19, 2019, Parliament speaker ( speaker ) for Goa.

On March 17, 2019, the incumbent Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar died of cancer. The BJP leadership selected Pramod Sawant as his successor. On March 19, 2019, he was sworn in by the governor and on March 20, a majority of 20 members in the Goanese parliament, which has 36 members, gave him confidence. In addition to the 12 BJP MPs, these included three MPs each from the Goa Forward Party (GFP) and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), as well as independent MPs.

Private

Savants mother tongue is Konkani . He also speaks Marathi and English. His wife Sulakshana is a chemistry teacher in Bicholim and was temporarily chairwoman of the BJP Mahila Morcha , the women's organization of the BJP in Goa.
