Preuschhof Prize

The Preuschhof Prize for Children's Literature has been awarded annually in Hamburg since 2014 for the best German-language first-reader new book from the previous year.

Structures

The 2013 First Readers Literature Prize was set up by the Education Forum Wilhelmsburg, the educational network on the Hamburg Elbe islands, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Wilhelmsburg reading weeks “The island reads”. The funding and prize money were contributed by the eponymous Hamburg Preuschhof Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting disadvantaged children and young people. The Hamburg Cultural Foundation is also involved .

“First time reader” usually means the age group from 6 to 8 years. The special educational situation on the Elbe island (many third graders at first grader level) requires an expansion of the target group to the age group 8 to 10 years.

An unusual concept of active target group participation was developed to determine the winners . At the beginning of each year, ten titles are nominated for the final selection by a professional pre-jury. A children's jury, in which all elementary school classes from the Hamburg Elbe islands of Wilhelmsburg and Veddel can potentially take part, and in which actually several hundred children actually take part, ultimately votes on the books. Every child aged 6 to 10 years who has read at least three of the ten books is allowed to submit a rating.

The prize is advertised in the entire German-speaking area. It is endowed with 1000 euros. It is awarded every year as part of the Wilhelmsburger Reading Weeks.
