Primaciálne námestie (German Primatialplatz ) is a square in the Slovak capital Bratislava , within the historic city center. It is named after the Primatialpalais on the south side, other important buildings are part of the old town hall on the west side, the new town hall on the north side and the Ursuline monastery in the northeast corner. The short and narrow Kostolná Street connects to the Main Square and the Franciscan Square, while Uršulínska and Klobučnícka streets lead to the Slovak National Uprising Square .

Historical

The location of today's square was first mentioned in writing in 1370, when the meat and bakery market was moved here from the main square. Traditional German names in the 15th century are pey den Fleischpenkn and unter den Fleischpengken . In the 16th and 17th centuries, the square was called Traidmarkt , as the grain trade was carried out here. The public area has only been called a square since the 18th century, for example in Jesuitenplatz (1754) and the square in front of the Cardinal Palee (1783). In 1879 the square was named Batthyányplatz , after the Archbishop of Gran and Prince Primate of Hungary József Batthyány , on whose initiative the Primate's Palace was built.

The square has had its current name since 1920.
