The Professor Molchanov ( Russian Профессор Молчанов ) is an ice-reinforced ( ice class UL / 1A Super) research and cruise ship of the Akademik-Schuleykin class named after the Soviet meteorologist Pavel Moltschanow .
The research ship of the Akademik-Schuleykin class, launched in a Finnish shipyard at the end of 1982, was commissioned by the Soviet Union , to which it was delivered after completion.
Until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the ship was used as a research vessel for Arctic and oceanological research. It made 34 trips including three worldwide hydrological research trips.
The new owner converted the ship into a cruise ship for trips in the far north. The home port of the almost 70 m long ship is the northern Russian city of Murmansk .
Professor Molchanov's sister ship , the Akademik Shokalskiy , gained notoriety in December 2013 after it got stuck in the ice on an Antarctic tour and the passengers had to be rescued. Further sister ships of Professor Molchanov are: Akademik Schuleykin , Professor Multanovskiy , Arnold Veimer , Akademik Gamburtsyev , Geologist Dmitriy Nalivkin , Professor Polshkov , Akademik Golitsyn and Professor Khromov .
