Prognathodes is a genus of butterfly fish (Chaetodon)comprising 13 species. They live in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, some species are endemic in a very narrow range, e.g. B. Prognathodes dichrous in St. Helena and Ascension or Prognathodes obliquus in the rocks of Saint Peter and Saint Paul .

features

Prognathodes species are 10 to 16 centimeters long, are high-backed and usually silvery white with yellow and dark brown or black markings. Two species, Prognathodes dichrous and Prognathodes obliquus, are predominantly dark brown in color, with a white tail and dorsal fin. The dorsal fin of the Prognathodes species is very high and is supported by unusually strong fin spines. The snout is generally longer than that of the Chaetodon genus .

Systematics

Prognathodes is the sister group of Chaetodon and was previously assigned to Chaetodon as a subgenus.

Way of life
