Prokinetic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A prokinetic (from the Greek πρό for and κινέω to move ) is a drug that increases the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract . It works by promoting forward peristalsis and inhibiting reverse peristalsis. The areas of application are accordingly: On the one hand, they can be used effectively against nausea and vomiting by inhibiting reverse peristalsis (this group is also known as antiemetics ). On the other hand, they can also be used against constipation , a typical complication after surgical interventions on the abdominal organs and a side effect of some drugs (especially strong pain medication such as opioids and certain psychotropic drugs ).
