Propiverine is a drug that is used as an anticholinergic and antispasmodic .

use

Propiverine belongs to the group of neurotropic-musculotropic antispasmodics. It is therefore used in urology for (urge) incontinence and increased micturition frequency (excessively frequent emptying of the urinary bladder ).

Mode of action

Propiverine has a dual effect:

  • an anticholinergic effect, d. H. a competitive inhibitory effect on the acetylcholine-mediated transmission of excitation at the muscarinic receptor , such as atropine (neurotropic effect) and
  • A direct antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles, comparable to papaverine , which comes about by inhibiting the calcium influx through the L-type calcium channels in the muscle cells of the smooth muscles (musculotropic effect).

Pharmacokinetics

Due to its long half-life of 14 to 20 hours compared to the other neurotropic-musculotropic antispasmodics, twice daily intake is sufficient.

Side effects

Use can lead to tiredness, gastrointestinal disorders, dry mouth, drop in blood pressure with symptoms of dizziness and, in the case of high doses, a decrease in sweat gland secretion (heat build-up, reddening of the skin).
