The Protestantse Kerk is an essentially late Gothic Protestant Uniate parish church in Oostkapelle (municipality of Veere , province of Zeeland ) in the Netherlands . It is characterized by the monumental church tower that towers above the landscape on Walcheren and is Rijksmonument under number 42166.

history

Before 1067 there was an independent parish church in Oostkapelle, from which a large area was looked after with pastoral care. It was a daughter church of the West Minster in Middelburg . With the growth of the surrounding peasant communities, daughter churches of Oostkapelle were gradually removed and became independent parochial churches : Grijpskerke and Serooskerke around 1200, Mariekerke and Oost-Domburg around 1235 and Vrouwenpolder 1324.

Up until the Reformation the church was consecrated to Saint Willibrord . The tower, built in the Scheldt Gothic style, dates back to the 14th century, is 48 meters high and has a wall thickness of 190 centimeters. It also served as a navigation mark for shipping to Veere . The nave was badly damaged by Spanish troops in 1572 during the Eighty Years' War . After that, services were held in a wooden church that fell victim to a storm in 1582. As a result, the nave was reduced in size as a hall church and the remains of the old church were completely removed. The building work was completed in 1610. During the 19th century the church was rebuilt, but these changes were reversed in a major renovation from 1957 to 1959. During the summer months the tower can be climbed and the so-called Oudheidskamer (German: Chamber of Antiquities) can be visited.

In the summer holidays, following the Sunday services of the Dutch community, German-language Protestant services are offered by pastors of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .
