Protests in Djibouti in 2011

The 2011 protests in Djibouti began on February 18, 2011 with demonstrations by thousands against President Ismail Omar Guelleh and were part of the Arab Spring .

The population in Djibouti is made up of 60% Arabs and 35% Afar . Djibouti was one of the last colonies in Africa, and in 1977 it was declared independent from France. The protests are directed against corruption in the country and were also caused by the large number of unemployed in the country. The protests in the country led the President of Djibouti to promise reforms. In a French newspaper interview, President Isamil Omar Guelleh saw his country on the right track in terms of reform.
