The formation is usually referred to as a storm troop ( Greek Δυνάμεις Καταδρομών - Dynamis Katadromon , English Raider Forces). The soldiers are addressed as Katadromeas ( Greek Καταδρομέας , pl. Καταδρομείς - Katadromis ) and have the nickname “Prasinoskoufides” (green berets) or “Lokatzides” (mountain striker).

history

Ieros Lochos (Holy Company)

The origin of the storm unit goes back to the Ieros Lochos ( Greek Ιερός Λόχος Holy Band ) from the Second World War , a Greek free unit that joined the Allied forces of the Special Air Service in World War II . Its members were mainly officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) who fled to the Axis powers in North Africa after the fall of Greece . After the founding of the Ieros Lochos in 1942, together with a unit of the Free French Troops and British units, they formed the base of the L Detachment , a division of the SAS that specializes in hit and run (military) - hand strokes , German strike and run away Specialized in airfields, ports and fuel depots in North Africa.

The "Sacred Squadron" was later used in the Greek theaters of war, where it was able to recapture several East Aegean islands from the Axis powers. After the liberation of Greece, a reorganization of the Greek military ( ELAS ) under the supervision of the British was proposed. This proposal included the establishment of a small, highly trained special unit.

LOK

When the Greek Civil War broke out in 1946 , the government decided to set up a special unit designed primarily to support the royalists and British units in order to get control of areas that were in the hands of communist guerrillas. The Gebirgskommandos (mountain troops , LOK ( Greek ΛΟΚ - Λόχοι Ορεινών Καταδρομών , Lochi Orinōn Katadromon)) were officially founded on January 20, 1947 and began operations in Greece's mountains almost immediately afterwards. The Second Mountain Command (Vita (Devteros) Lochos Orinon Katadromon) was formed in August 1947 in Vouliagmeni , Athens and was deployed in the civil war in Thessaly , Central Greece , Epirus , Western Macedonia and Euboea . The Fourth Mountain Command (Delta (Tetartos) Lochos Orinon Katadromon) was founded in Volos in December 1947 and had operations in all parts of Greece. The Fifth Mountain Command (Epsilon (Pemptos) Lochos Orinon Katadromon) was established in April 1949 and took part in combat operations until December 1949. In 1949 the LOK squadrons were so successful that the storm troops were increased to two brigades. The Third Mountain Command (Gamma (Tritos) Lochos Orinon Katadromon, founded in 1949) was converted into a unit with amphibious capabilities in 1963, while the First Mountain Command was disbanded after the end of the civil war, was not reactivated until 1968, and after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 was converted into an amphibious unit.

In the 1960s, the Greek Secret Service (KYP) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) secretly began training and arming the Lokatzides . A branch of the LOC played an important role as an instrument of the secret services in the military coup of 1967. They captured the army headquarters in Cholargos , Athens.

Seal of the Greek Army

After the end of the Greek military dictatorship , the LOC were dissolved and converted into storm troops ( Greek Δυνάμεις Καταδρομών dynamis katadromon ) and placed under the command of the Diikisi Idikon Dynameon ( Greek Διοίκηση Ειιικών Δυνάμεων , command of the special units). After a further restructuring in 1996, all storm troops were combined in today's brigade.

Uniform and badge

The soldiers of the First Parachute Brigade wear the standardized Greek lizard camouflage suits of the Greek army. Members of the special parachute jumper unit (ETA and Z 'MAK) occasionally wear different uniforms, depending on requirements.

All members of the brigade wear the winged sword insignia, symbolizing the "deadly, silent and swift" nature of the operations. A banner that runs over sword and wings bears the motto Who dares wins ( Greek Ο ΤΟΛΜΩΝ ΝΙΚΑ - O Tolmon Nika ) in memory of the holy crowd (World War II) who fought with the SAS Brigade in World War II. The unit emblem is labeled ΔΥΝΑΜΕΙΣ ΚΑΤΑΔΡΟΜΩΝ (storm troop). Camouflage suits are also worn on duty.

All Katadromis wear the green beret with the coat of arms on the left.
