François de Camps (born January 31, 1643 , Amiens ; † August 15 (April 16 according to LCCN) 1723 , Paris ) was a French cleric , coadjutor in the dioceses of Albi and Glandèves , then designated bishop of Pamiers (1685-1693) . At the same time, he was an important numismatist who laid the foundation for the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France .

biography

François de Camps first became a teacher at the "Petites Écoles de Port-Royal" around 1656 after he had completed his doctorate in theology. In 1666 he got a job as secretary to the Bishop of Mende , Hyacinthe Serroni , and soon afterwards became his vicar general . In 1676 he was transferred to Albi; There he acquired his Cabinet de curiosité , which enabled him to build up his coin collection, which he sold to Victor Marie d'Estrées in 1720 and which later passed to the Crown and today form the basis of the collections of the Cabinet des médailles in the Bibliothèque nationale .

François de Camps was representative of the ecclesiastical province of Albi at the Assemblée du clergé of 1682. On September 2, 1682 he was elected by Léon Bacoué , the Bishop of Glandèves , as coadjutor. He administered the diocese for two years and carried on the official business even after the death of the bishop without commission, but had to give up the office when François Verjus was appointed bishop in November 1685 .

He was then designated as Bishop of Pamiers himself on November 12, 1685 and administered the diocese in the function of vicaire capitulaire . He never received his appointment , although he was allowed to consecrate the Cathédrale Saint-Antonin de Pamiers in 1689 . This activism and conflicts with his cathedral chapter meant that he had to leave the diocese when Jean-Baptiste de Verthamon was appointed bishop on September 8, 1693 . In return, he received the benefice of the Signy monastery in the Archdiocese of Reims , which alone brought him 40,000 livres annually, as well as the Saint-Marcel monastery in the diocese of Cahors and several priories . He died in Paris on August 15, 1723.
