The Sants – La Sagrera tunnel (also called the Provença tunnel as one of several different variants discussed ) is a double-track railway tunnel in Barcelona . It was opened on January 8, 2013 and connects the Sants station in the southwest of the city with the new Sagrera station , which is being built in the northeast and is expected to open in 2023. With the help of the new tunnel, continuous journeys from the high-speed line Madrid – Barcelona to the high-speed line Barcelona – Figueras – French border are possible.

technology

The tunnel has a length of 5.6 kilometers, of which 4.8 kilometers are being built with the help of a tunnel boring machine. The 105 meter long and 2300 ton heavy machine comes from the German manufacturer Herrenknecht . After commissioning of the tunnel boring machine was postponed several times, driving finally began at the end of March 2010. The tunnel boring machine works its way from La Sagrera towards Sants. The mechanical tunneling was ended in August 2011. The tunnel cross-section is 85 square meters, the tube has a diameter of 10.4 meters, the maximum overburden is 41 meters. The first (seen from La Sagrera) 422 meters and the last 395 meters of the tunnel will be constructed using the cut-and-cover method. The tunnel will have twelve emergency exits. It crosses under five tunnels of the Barcelona Metro and one each of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya and Renfe .

In February 2008 the work was awarded to a consortium of three companies. The construction time should be 35 months. The cost of building the tunnel is estimated at 179.3 million euros. Two tracks lie in one tube. The tunnel runs largely under the Carrer Provença , Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer Mallorca streets . Because of the course under the Carrer Provença , the designation as tunel Provença arose in contrast to other courses, e.g. B. along the coast, as tunel litoral .

On July 26, 2011 the tunnel boring machine reached the exit pit at the intersection of the streets Provença and Entença after almost 5.1 km through the underground .

criticism

The plans for the tunnel met with criticism in Barcelona. Critics claim that the tube will pass under numerous buildings, the builder Adif claims the opposite. The proximity to the Sagrada Família has also provoked protests. The foundations of the church under construction are driven under with little lateral clearance. While the foundation of the church extends to a depth of 16 meters, the tunnel is 30 meters deep at this point. 104 piles in the ground are supposed to protect the structure. They each have a diameter of 1.5 meters and reach 40 meters in depth. The UNESCO refused the church because of work on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger to set. According to the original planning status, the construction work should arrive at the foot of the church in August 2010. Finally, the tunnel boring machine passed the church in October 2010. The Gaudi building Casa Milà was undercut in February 2011.

The Sagrada Familia cathedral was not damaged. In June, the Audiencia Nacional , the Supreme Court, dismissed the Sagrada Familia and others' action against the construction of the tunnel.
