history

Former administration building in Düsseldorf's Friedrichstrasse

It was founded by decree by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. on January 5, 1836 in Koblenz , the official seat of the Upper President of the Prussian Rhine Province , as "Provinzial Feuersocietät". With the establishment of the Provinzial, the two Rhenish fire firms "Bergische Feuer Assekuranz" and "Koblenz-Trierische Brandversicherungsanstalt", which had been founded in 1722, were merged. This marked the end of the economic reform in the Prussian state. The reason for the establishment was the financial relief of Prussia. At the same time, the residents of the Rhine Province should be granted effective insurance cover in the event of fire damage. At first only real estate was insured, only 30 years later movable property of all kinds followed. Georg Freiherr von Hauer became the first director .

The head office of the insurance company was relocated to Düsseldorf in 1875. The name of the insurance was changed in 1903 to "Provinzial Feuerversicherungsanstalt der Rheinprovinz". As a result, the principle of reciprocity was abandoned and replaced by the provincial association as guarantor . The cooperation with the savings banks followed in 1908 in order to be able to broker mortgages and in return take out building insurance. The Provincial Landtag in Düsseldorf decided in 1914 to found the "Provincial Life Insurance Institution of the Rhine Province". The business with composite insurance such as accident and car liability insurance was started in 1924.

The headquarters building was destroyed in the Second World War. After the war, business operations could be resumed in 1946. The legal successor of the Rhine Province as guarantor was initially the newly founded state of North Rhine-Westphalia , followed in 1953 by the Rhineland Regional Council . The business area extended over two occupation zones . In 1957, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate also followed as guarantor.

On May 5, 1995, the company moved into new corporate headquarters in the south of Düsseldorf. A new statute came into effect on August 26, 1997. The Rheinische Sparkassen- und Giroverband with 34%, the Sparkassenverband Rheinland-Pfalz with 33 1/3% and the Landschaftsverband Rheinland with 32 2/3% became the new guarantors of the insurance company. In order to illustrate the close partnership with the savings banks, the company has since been labeled "Insurance of the savings banks".
