Pruchnik is a town of 3300 inhabitants in Poland . It is nineteen kilometers southwest of Jarosław on the Mleczka and belongs to the powiat Jarosławski in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship . Pruchnik is best known for the numerous wooden houses with archways from the 19th century that are well worth seeing.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1299. In 1370 Pruchnik, which was owned by the Pruchnicki family, was given town rights . In 1772, when Poland was first partitioned , the city became part of Austria . In 1935 the town's rights were revoked. On January 1, 2011, the place received city rights again.

Controversy

The traditional practice in connection with the Easter celebrations in Pruchnik is the burning and drowning of a "Judas" doll, which obviously has the clichéd features of an Orthodox follower of Judaism , which were also used by anti-Semites during the National Socialist period (crooked nose, orthodox headgear and Hairstyle). The puppet is dragged through the city by a group of Pruchnik residents. There are also children among them. The doll is beaten by adults and children. Ultimately, her head is cut off and her stomach is torn open. Then she is drowned in the river. The ritual of the Judas Court in Pruchnik from April 2019, in which anti-Jewish slogans were used as encouragement to strike, was declared anti-Semitic by the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and also by the Polish chairman of the Committee of the Catholic Church for the Dialogue with Judaism - Bishop Rafał Markowski - condemned. According to the Polish press, it is said to be a custom that was already widespread in the 18th century. However, the journalists could not have found out from whom the initiative came to revive the event ten years after it last took place in 2009.
