The Psalterium alias laudatorium (Eng. Psalter or hymns of praise ) is a literary work that was written in Latin by Francesc Eiximenis between 1404 and 1408 in Valencia . It was the antipope of Avignon , Benedict XIII. dedicated.

Structure and content

The book contains three hundred forty-four prayers , the three rows of contemplative be divided prayers: De laude creatoris (dt. About the praise of the Creator ), De vita et excellentia redemptoris (dt. About life and the excellence of the Redeemer ) and De vita et ordinatione hominis viatoris ( Eng . About the life and order of man in the world ).

As Albert Hauf has already pointed out, this work, together with the Vida de Jesucrist , forms a unit of literary creation with similar content, although the style is definitely different.

origin

Between 1404 and 1408 Francesc Eiximenis wrote his collection of prayers in Latin, which he called the Psalterium aka Laudatorium (Eng. Psalter or hymns of praise ). The first prayers were dedicated to Berenguer de Ribalta when he became Bishop of Tarazona in 1404 . The final collection was Pero de Luna, the Aragonese Pope of Avignon Benedict XIII. dedicated.

Although Benedict XIII. perhaps already interested in the book in 1405, as a document written in Barcelona on August 11, 1405 confirms, it is possible that Eiximenis gave Pope Benedict XIII. handed over the collection when he went to the Council of Perpignan in November 1408. It is believed that the work made a positive impression on the Pope; This helped Eiximenis to reach his last important posts: Patriarch of Jerusalem and apostolic administrator (interim bishop) of the Diocese of Elne (old name of the Diocese of Perpignan).

Translations

There is an incomplete translation of 100 prayers into Catalan , made in 1416 by Guillem Fontana , and published in Girona on March 20, 1495 by Diego de Gumiel .
