Eduard Rüther (born September 18, 1871 in Nordleda ; † August 31, 1941 in Hamburg ) was a German historian and high school teacher.

origin

He grew up as the youngest of the eight children of the main teacher and cantor Heinrich Christian Nicolaus Rüther, who belonged to a long-established Hadelner family.

Education and work

After receiving most of his schooling as private lessons in his home town, he passed the Abitur in Duisburg and then studied philosophy and history in Göttingen , Heidelberg and Munich from 1891 . He completed his studies with a doctorate and then went to school in Hamburg. From 1898 to the First World War he taught at the Eimsbüttel secondary school, now the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer high school . After returning from the war, he came to the Hansa School, today Hansa-Gymnasium Bergedorf, and emphasized German idealism in class. From 1927 to 1934 he was the head of the school.

On the side and after leaving the teaching post, he researched the history of his rural home and also helped his brother Heinrich Rüther with his homeland research and publications.

The work of the two brothers still forms a basis of knowledge about the history of the country of Hadeln . However, some of their statements have now been refuted.

family

Eduard Rüther married Elisabeth Brauns from Hamburg and had a daughter, Anna, born in 1906, and a son, Heinz, born in 1909.
