Ptenidium pusillum is a beetle fromthe dwarf beetle family (Ptiliidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 0.9 to 1.2 millimeters and are thus slightly larger than the similar Ptenidium fuscicorne . The wings are more pointed at the back, the tips often have a light spot. The wings are more clearly structured and more densely hairy than in the similar species. The antennae and legs are yellow. The former are only long enough to reach roughly the middle of the body.

Occurrence and way of life

The species occurs in Europe, north to Lapland and south in the whole Mediterranean area as well as in North Africa, in the Caucasus , Asia Minor , in Iran and also in North America. It is widespread in Central Europe and usually occurs frequently or very frequently everywhere. The animals live under rotting plant material, in chaff, manure, compost and the like. They are often found myrmekophil in ants.
