Pterocactus australis is a species of the genus Pterocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Pterocactus australis forms spherical to pear-shaped shoot segments. They stand on top of each other in short chains, are greenish brown to purple and are up to 8 inches long and 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. The few glochids are inconspicuous. The 1 to 2 upwardly directed, whitish to brown or black and flattened central spines are only present on the shoot ends and are up to 2 centimeters long. The 10 to 15 white radial spines are 3 to 4 millimeters long.

The yellow flowers are covered with a pink or brownish tinge and are 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The fruits are covered with areoles, which fall off when ripe.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pterocactus australis is distributed in southern Argentina in the provinces of Neuquen , Río Negro , Chubut and Santa Cruz as well as in Chile near the city of Chile Chico on stony hill sides at altitudes of up to 500 meters.

The first description of the species as Opuntia australis was made in 1899 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Pterocactus in 1950

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
