Pterocactus tuberosus is a species of the genus Pterocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Pterocactus tuberosus forms several prostrate to slightly ascending, cylindrical and uncontaminated shoots. They are brown or greenish brown and are 7 to 20 inches long and 0.5 to 1.5 inches in diameter. On the shoots there are vertical purple lines below the areoles . There are 8 to 12 whitish spines per areole , which are 0.5 to 1 centimeter long. The roots are large and bulbous.

The lemon-yellow to brownish-yellow or copper-colored flowers are 3 to 5 centimeters in diameter, the stigma is dark red or light green in color. The spherical fruit reaches 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter and is initially dark brown in color, later it dries up and is ocher in color.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pterocactus tuberosus is distributed from northern to southern Argentina from the provinces of Salta to Neuquén and Río Negro at altitudes of up to 1500 meters.

The correct species name has long been a matter of dispute. Pfeiffer described the plant for the first time in 1837 as Opuntia tuberosa based on plant material from the region of Mendoza . In 1897, however, Karl Moritz Schumann described Pterocactus kuntzei after plants from the Mendoza area. Joseph Nelson Rose was in the Mendoza area in 1915 and found a turnip root cactus above the city. Britton and Rose were convinced that it was the same plant that Pfeiffer had described as Opuntia tuberosa in 1837 . For them there was no doubt that this plant corresponds exactly to the Pterocactus kuntzei described by Schumann . In their work The Cactaceae they described this plant as Pterocactus tuberosus .

Taylor and Iliff made it clear in their work from 1996 that the species are the same and that the species name tuberosa takes precedence.

The following types are considered synonyms:

  • Pterocactus kuntzei K.Schum.
  • Pterocactus decipiens pickle
  • Pterocactus kuntzei f. lelongii Ruiz Leal ex R. Kiesling
  • Pterocactus tuberosus f. lelongii ( Ruiz Leal ex R.Kiesling ) R.Kiesling

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
