Pterochromis congicus is a species of African cichlid that occurs in the catchment area of the upper and central Congo , as well as in the Malebo and Tumba lakes. However, there are also reports of an occurrence in the Gribingui , a southern tributary of the Upper Shari in the Central African Republic .

features

The fish are 15 to 20 cm long, large-headed and high-backed. The standard length is 2.5 times the body height. The big mouth is strongly slanted. The head profile is indented above the eyes. The eyes are relatively large, their diameter is about as large as the length of the mouth. The upper and lower jaw are covered with three rows of teeth. On the first outer gill arch , the gill spines are long and pointed. The pectoral fins are as long as the head. The first rays of the pelvic fins are elongated like a thread and extend to the base of the anal fin. The caudal fin is slightly rounded. The tail stalk is slightly higher than it is long. The scales are cycloid .

Pterochromis congicus is gray to gray-brown in color. On the sides of the body there may be indistinct, irregular spots or two longitudinal rows. A dark spot lies on the gill-covers; There may be a tilapia spot on the dorsal fin . The unpaired fins and the pelvic fins are colored similar to the body, but can also show dark or light spots or points. The pectoral fins are transparent.

The ecology and reproduction of the cichlid are hardly known. He probably feeds on a carnivorous diet.

Systematics

Pterochromis congicus was described in 1897 by the Belgian-British zoologist George Albert Boulenger as Pelmatochromis congicus and in 1973 transferred to the genus Pterochromis by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas , which has remained monotypical since then . However , Pterochromis congicus is closely related to the genus Pelmatochromis . Both genera together form the tribe Pelmatochromini.
