Ptiliolum spencei is a beetle fromthe dwarf beetle family (Ptiliidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 0.6 to 0.65 millimeters. The body is black or brown-black in color, the wings are brown in color. The deck wings have completely rounded shoulder angles and are not flared in front of them. The pronotum is also completely rounded at the rear corners, its sides are not ragged in front of it. The animals are winged and have compound eyes . The pronotum is significantly narrower than the wing. It is less dense, but has a slightly more punctiform structure than the similar Ptiliolum fuscum, and on its upper side it is somewhat more distinct, longer and slightly protruding hairy. The antennae are brownish, the legs are yellow or brown-yellow in color.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is widespread in Europe and the Caucasus , it is absent in the far north. It is only distributed locally in Central Europe and is not common. The animals live under decaying plant material and on decaying wood, in sludge, dung and also in old and dry nests of ants such as the red wood ant ( Formica rufa ).
