Ptilium caesum is a beetle from the family of dwarf beetles (Ptiliidae).
features
The beetles reach a body length of 0.55 to 0.6 millimeters. Their body is dark in color, hairy a little longer than in Ptilium affine and flatly arched. The pronotum has a sharply incised, almost complete central furrow and two longitudinal lines on both sides in the rear part of the shield. The sides of the pronotum are flared in front of the base and have a fine but noticeable edge. Its side lines converge slightly towards the front and stand out sharply. The upper wings are colored yellow-brown translucent at the tip, they are less rounded on the sides and a little longer than in the closely related species. The antennae and legs are yellow.
Occurrence and way of life
The species occurs in central and parts of southern Europe and in the Caucasus . It is also known from France, Great Britain, Sweden and the northern part of European Russia. The animals live in detritus and dry manure.
