Puakena Boreham

Puakena Boreham (born December 18, 1970 in Nui ) is a Tuvaluan doctor and politician . She is a member of parliament and since 2016 Minister for Public Works and Natural Resources of the island state.

Puakena Boreham studied at the Fiji School of Medicine in Suva , now the College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences at Fiji National University and graduated in 1998. She initially worked for the Ministry of Health as an anesthetist and chief physician at Princess Margaret Hospital in Funafuti , the only hospital in Tuvalu. In 2014 she completed a postgraduate degree in Global Health Policy at the Australian National University in Canberra . She has a PhD.

In 2015 she took part in the elections in Tuvalu for the constituency of Nui constituency , the small Nui atoll with about 1500 inhabitants, and achieved the second highest number of votes after Mackenzie Kiritome with 237 votes (26%) . On March 31, 2015, she was able to move into the Fale i Fono parliament as one of the two representatives for Nui .

In August 2016, Boreham took over the ministerial office of Minister for Works and Natural Resources from the late Elisala Pita . After Naama Maheu Latasi (1989 to 1997) and Pelenike Isaia (2011 to 2015), Boreham is Tuvalu's third member of parliament and the only woman in Enele Sopoaga's cabinet .
