Public Knowledge Project

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Public Knowledge Project (PKP) is a research and software development initiative supported by four partners: the educational science departments of the University of British Columbia and Stanford University, and the library and the Canadian Center for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University .

history

The PKP was founded in 1998 by John Willinsky , who is intensely committed to Open Access , at the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver , Canada. In 2001 the first software was completed. Under the technical direction of Kevin Jamieson, the PKP developed from now on Open Journal Systems , Open Conference Systems and Open Harvester Systems under the GNU General Public License . In 2005 he began working with Lynn Copeland, a librarian at Simon Fraser University Library in Burnaby , Canada, and Rowly Lorimer, director of the Canadian Center for Studies in Publishing at the same university. In 2007 the PKP held its first conference, which took place for the third time in 2011. In 2007, Willinsky accepted the call to Stanford University, USA, which expanded the circle of institutional partners of the PKP.

aims

The PKP aims to improve the quality and accessibility of research results. The researchers and doctoral students from the various departments involved, as well as librarians, examine whether and how new technologies can be used for this purpose. The development of suitable software is based on the consideration of technical as well as social and economic aspects.

Software development

The PKP initiated five independent open source applications with linked content that are constantly being further developed:

  • Open Monograph Press (OMP) supports the publication of scientific monographs. It offers functions similar to OJS for magazines.

In addition, the PKP develops the joint program library pkp-lib, which provides basic functions for the individual applications.
