geology

The Côletal in the north is accompanied by metamorphic basement rocks of the north-western Massif Central ( lower gneiss cover and Thiviers-Payzac unit ). At the bottom lie mica slate , which can be found in the Côletal between Faugeraulas and La Rochette and north of the center of Saint-Romain . Small amphibolite and eclogite strands are inserted into them , and serpentinites are also found in the southern mica schist deposits . Above it are leptynites of the Arch of Saint-Yrieix , which emerged from Ordovician granites . They are open-minded at Faugeraulas and northwest of the center of Saint-Romain . The mica schists are thrust along the Côletal by the Thiviers sandstone from the Thiviers-Payzac unit in a north-westerly direction. The Thiviers sandstone, consisting of former rhyodacites , occurs here mainly in the facies of the Payzac quartzite . It contains a small amphibolite and metakeratophyr occurrence near La Chabanne . The amphibolite containing garnet continues as a train to the northeast.

The metamorphic rocks have places to Isograd of Disthens achieved, but generally include the Staurolithzone on. The predominant strike direction of the metamorphic foliation is northeast.

The basement rocks were transgressed by the flat Jura sediments of the northern Aquitaine basin . The shift package starts in Lias ( Unterhettang ) and ends in Dogger ( Unterbathon ). The sediments are located north of the Côle, around the center of Saint-Romain , in the valley of the Ruisseau de Bonis and in the valley of the Ruisseau de la Font Pépie . The altitudes between the valleys are generally covered by Young Pleistocene , colluvial gravel . In stratigraphically highest position there are fluvial gravel fillings from former rivers, which possibly go back to the Pliocene ; to be seen at Dala , Le Peyrou , between La Pommerède and Fressenède and south of Saint-Clément . Recent alluvium was deposited in the lowland of the Côle .

The municipality is in the area of influence of the south-east trending marginal fault of the Massif Central, which has split into several side branches and smaller transverse fractures. Their influence manifests itself in a silicification of the Lias in places and a recrystallization of the Dogger.

In La Chabanne a local in the 19th century in the micaschists pyrite mass ( gossan ) mined that several thousand tonnes of ore delivered.
