Saint-Mesmin ( Occitan Sent Maimin ) is a southern French municipality with 318 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Dordogne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region (before 2016 Aquitaine ). It consists of the main town and several hamlets (hameaux) and individual farms (fermes) .
Location and climate
The place Saint-Mesmin is a good 50 km (driving distance) northeast of Périgueux in a loop of the Auvézère in the wooded Périgord vert at an altitude of approx. 290 m . The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 965 mm / year) falls over the year.

The population decline in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.
economy
The community was and still is largely oriented towards agriculture and forestry, with livestock also playing a significant role. Craftsmen and small service providers have settled in the village itself. Since the 1960s, some vacant houses have been rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .
history
There is no news from the early and high Middle Ages; the local church was not built until the 15th century. During the French Revolution , i. H. from 1792 to 1795 the place was renamed Mont Mesmin .
Attractions
- The St. Église Saint-Maximin , consecrated to Maximinus von Trier , is a late medieval, almost windowless fortified church with a flat end of the choir. Buttresses stabilize the sides and the facade of the largely unadorned building, which is elevated by a two-part bell gable (clocher mur) . The small south portal shows a keel arch that was widespread in the late Gothic period .
- The Colline des Ages is the highest point in the municipality. The pilgrimage chapel Notre Dame de Partout was built on its flank in the 19th century .
