geology

Sainte-Croix-de-Mareuil is in the heart of the Mareuil anticline . The exposed strata of the north-eastern Aquitaine Basin extends from the Kimmeridgium up to and including the Upper Santonium . In the Pleistocene , colluvial alterites were deposited on the chalk sediments in the northeast of the municipality , which essentially consist of sands and gravels, which emerged from the sandy upper santonium. Also worth mentioning is the clearly recognizable layer of the Turonium ( Angoumia ); in a semicircle it surrounds the slight structural bulge of the anticline with its cenomanium and kimmeridgium. The turonium is commercially mined in a large quarry near Verdinas by the CMP company. The extremely pure lime is used as granules, aggregate in the manufacture of photographic paper and as lime slabs for the construction industry.

The oldest surviving structure in Sainte-Croix-de-Mareuil is without a doubt the Romanesque church.
