The Romanesque church of Les Graulges

Les Graulges ( Occitan Los Grauges ) is a town and commune Déléguée in the French commune of Mareuil en Périgord with 60 inhabitants (as at 1st January 2017) in the northwest of the department Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The Commune déléguée Les Graulges borders the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park .

etymology

Les Graulges, in Occitan Los Grauges , is possibly derived from the Germanic proper name Gerald .

geography

Les Graulges is five kilometers north of Mareuil and 17 kilometers west-southwest of Nontron (as the crow flies). The municipality of Les Graulges was surrounded by the following neighboring municipalities:

Les Graulges was a commune on the border with the Charente department. In terms of area, it was the smallest municipality in the canton of Mareuil.

The Commune déléguée consists of the town center and the following hamlets and farms:

Côte de la Bure , Le Maine Lacan , Les Brandes and Malut .

The main floodwater is the west flowing Nizonne , which forms the southern border to Puyrenier and Sainte-Croix-de-Mareuil. At the southeast corner of the Commune déléguée area, the '' Ruisseau de Bretanges '', which drains to the southwest, flows into the Nizonne as a right branch. In its lower reaches, the stream formed the eastern border with Beaussac. To the east of Malut it takes up a right side branch, which comes from the northwest and in this section marks the northeast border to Beaussac.

The topographically lowest point in the Commune déléguée Les Graulges is 98 meters above sea level on the Nizonne in the southwest; the river leaves the commune déléguée here. The highest point at 185 meters is on a prominent hill west of the town center. The absolute height difference was 87 meters.

geology

The Commune déléguée Les Graulges is located entirely on flat (maximum angle of incidence 6 to 8 ° to the southwest) sediments of the northern Aquitaine Basin . Structurally, the sediments belong to the north wing of the Combiers-Saint-Crépin-de-Richemont syncline . The upcoming shift package begins with the flabby, partly fibrous chalk limestone of the Ligérie ( Unterturon ). The limestones line the right arm of the Ruisseau de Bretanges near Malut . Above the Ligérien follow the Rudistenkalke des Angoumiens with the Angoulême formation and the Upper Angoumien. The Angoumien accompanies the right side of the valley of the Ruisseau des Bretanges to the confluence with the Nizonne. The hard fossil limestone of the Coniacium then lies on the Angoumien, to be seen in the town center and along the Nizonne. The coniacium is replaced by the lower canton to the west of the town center - platy, gray limestone containing glauconite . The series ends with platy, oyster- bearing marl limestone , silty limestone rich in glauconite and sands of the Upper Canton, exposed in the far west of the municipality. The Obersanton is covered by ancient tertiary colluvium , which emerged from the sands of the Obersanton and was rearranged in the Pleistocene ( ACC formation ). The sediments in the Nizonne flood plain come from the Holocene .

history

The oldest surviving structure in Les Graulges is the Romanesque local church from the 12th century.

The commune of Les Graulges became with effect from January 1, 2017 with the communes of Champeaux-et-la-Chapelle-Pommier , Beaussac , Léguillac-de-Cercles , Mareuil , Monsec , Puyrenier , Saint-Sulpice-de-Mareuil and Vieux-Mareuil merged to form the Commune nouvelle Mareuil en Périgord and has since had the status of a Commune déléguée there. Until March 2015, it was one of the 14 municipalities in the canton of Mareuil , after which it became part of the canton of Brantôme from March 2015 .
