It belongs to the canton of Nontron and from 2015 to the newly created canton of Périgord Vert Nontronnais . etymology

Saint-Martin-le-Pin was first mentioned in writing in 1252 as Sanctus Martinus Pictus (the painted Saint Martin). This corresponds to the Occitan form Sent Martin lu Pench . The parish name refers to Saint Martin , Bishop of Tours in the 4th century. Before 1789 the community was called Saint Martin le Peint , as can be seen on the French Carte de Cassini from 1756 to 1789. As a result, Saint Martin had nothing to do with the “pine” tree, but was “painted”. During the National Convention (1792 to 1795), the community was named Le Chêne-Vert (green oak).

View from Talivaud to the south to the Ruisseau de Vergnes

The border to the municipality of Nontron is formed by the south-west flowing Ruisseau des Vergnes , a small right-hand tributary of the Bandiats. In the south-west, the municipality reaches the Bandiat itself, which at the same time represents the border with the neighboring municipalities of Saint-Martial-de-Valette and Lussas-et-Nontronneau . In the northwest, Saint-Martin-le-Pin reaches the Doue , also a right-hand tributary of the Bandiat, which is also the border river to the neighboring municipality of Javerlhac-et-la-Chapelle-Saint-Robert and further northeast to Le Bourdeix . The further border to Le Bourdeix is formed by the Ruisseau de Combas , which branches off from the Doue towards east-south-east. The Ruisseau de Saint-Martin , which flows off to the west and acts as another right tributary of the Bandiat, passes by the town center . The community also has several dry valleys , all of which are oriented to the southwest and flow into the Bandiat on the right. Examples are the valleys at Ars , at Talivaud , at Ribeyrolles and at Mérignac .

geology

Piégut-Pluviers-Granodiorite with harness straps near Moulin de La Côte

The integrity of the municipality of Saint-Martin-le-Pin is underlain by the Variscan basement ( Piégut-Pluviers-Granodiorit in its coarse-grained normal facies γ 3M ). The granodiorite is transgressed in the municipal area by flat-lying sediments from the northeastern Aquitaine Basin ( Lias ) and thus largely masked - the basic conglomerate can only just be seen near La Chapoulie . There follow arkose and Dolomite the Hettangiums (Formation L1-4 ), shales and marls of Pliensbachiums / Toarciums (Formation l5-9 ) and then granular limestone of the Doggers ( Bajocium - formations J1A , J1B and J1C ).

A southeast-northwest trending fault zone traverses Nontron , where the northeast half has been lifted out. It probably represents the trough shoulder of the Bandiat trench . This fault is in part very heavily mineralized , with barite , lead galena , greenockite , pyrite and sphalerite , which were also mined in the place earlier , as mineral grades . A smaller open gallery (Mine de la Mairie) has been preserved. In association with the fault zone, silicic acid-containing solutions penetrated , which in some cases led to a very significant recrystallization and silicification of the Jurassic grave sediments - especially the limestone of central Jurassic.

Continental tertiary sediments poured out of the Massif Central form both a fossil river system (formation HF ) and colluvium of the plateau and hillside locations (formation HC ), both of which mask the Jurassic subsoil. The river system follows a ridge that closes the northern side of the valley of the Ruisseau de Saint-Martin and runs down from La Borderie to the Bandiat.

At Ars the bandiat left a Pleistocene central terrace on the right side of the valley (formation Fw ). The river bed itself runs in the Holocene alluvium (formation Fy-z ), as does that of the Doue and the Ruisseau de Saint-Martin .
