Saint-Médard-d'Excideuil ( Occitan Sent Medard d'Eissiduelh ) is one of the main village and several hamlets (hamlets) and individual farms (fermes) existing southern French community with 546 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016 Aquitaine ).
Location and climate
The place Saint-Médard-d'Excideuil is a good 36 km (driving distance) northeast of Périgueux on the Loue river in the wooded Périgord vert at an altitude of about 165 m . The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 940 mm / year) falls over the year.

economy
In earlier centuries the residents lived on the yields of their fields, pastures and gardens as self-sufficient . There were several paper mills along the Loue in the 17th and 18th centuries . The community is still largely agriculturally oriented, with livestock also playing a significant role. Craftsmen and small service providers have settled in the village itself. Since the 1960s, some vacant houses have been rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) . The Repetto company produces all kinds of ballet shoes and sandals here .
history
The first mention of the place or its church comes from the 6th century. The name of the church Capella S. Medardi infra muros Exidolii can be found in a document from the 12th century . During the French Revolution , i. H. from 1792 to 1795, the place was renamed Médard sur la Loue .
Attractions
- The Église Saint-Médard is named after St. Named Medardus of Noyon . Parts of the medieval structure still exist, but the entire church was reworked in the 19th century. A niche figure of St. Medardus in the bishop's robe decorates the outside. The interior houses an altarpiece from the 17th century.
- Surroundings
- The Château des Charreaux , located approx. 1.5 km southeast of the village, dates from the late Middle Ages and is privately owned. It has been recognized as a Monument historique since 1948 .
- The Château d'Essendiéras is located approx. 2 km northeast of the village. It consists of two parts: a late medieval building from the 15th / 16th centuries. Century (Château Vieux) and a much more representative building of the 19th century (Château Neuf) . In the first half of the 20th century, the building complex served as an estate and seat of the Pouquet family, who also rented parts of it to holidaymakers, etc.; it is here that the writer André Maurois married the mannequin Simone de Caillavet in 1926 . Towards the end of the 20th century, the complex was converted into a hotel.
- In the extreme north of the municipality is the church of Saint-Loup in the hamlet of Gandumas . The entrance is on the north side; A small bell gable, divided in two, rises above the west facade .
- Located on the banks of the Loue, the Château de la Farge is an 18th century country house.
