Saint-Front-d'Alemps - town view

Saint-Front-d'Alemps ( Sent Front d'Alems in Occitan ) is a southern French municipality with 262 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Dordogne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region (before 2016 Aquitaine ). It consists of the main town and several hamlets (hameaux) and individual farms (fermes) .

Location and climate

The place Saint-Front-d'Alemps is a good 20 km (driving distance) northeast of Périgueux on the Alemps stream in the wooded Périgord vert at an altitude of about 150  m . The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 930 mm / year) falls over the year.

The population decline in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.

economy

The community is still largely agriculturally oriented, with livestock also playing a significant role. Craftsmen and small service providers have settled in the village itself. Since the 1960s, some vacant houses have been rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

The first mention of the place name (Sanctus Frontus de Lemps) comes from the 13th century. It is unclear whether the place was affected during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453).

Attractions

  • The Saint-Front church was built in the 12th century; However, from that time comes, only the Romanesque apse and a "shield dome" vaulted transept , while from rubble masonry nave , the crossing tower and the west facade were renovated in the 19th century. The building was entered in the inventory of the Monuments historiques in 2006 .
  • The Château de la Roche Pontissac probably dates back to the 16th century, but the structure was subsequently changed several times. The two-storey seat of a country nobleman has a dovecote (colombier) and a large late medieval barn (grange) . The building complex was entered in the inventory of the Monuments historiques in 1987.
  • The Château de Brochard was built in the 18th century. It was entered on the inventory of the Monuments historiques in 2006 .
  • The Château de Rochemorin , built in the 15th century, fell victim to a fire in the early years of the French Revolution (1791). The ruin has also been included in the inventory of the Monuments historiques since 2006 .
