Puccinia burnettii is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite from Hornmelden and various sweet grasses . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It iswidespread in the Holarctic .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia burnettii can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds emerging on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia burnettii grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The aecia of the species have 19–24 × 16–19 µm large, spherical or ellipsoidal, hyaline aeciospores with a wrinkled surface. Uredien of the kind are not known. Their yellow to golden uredospores are broadly ellipsoidal, 28–30 × 21–25 µm in size and finely spiky. The topside growing on leaves Telien the way are chocolate brown and early uncovered. The hazelnut-brown teliospores of the fungus are two-celled, usually elongated ellipsoidal and 26–41 × 25–28 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 200 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia burnettii extends from the western USA via Russia to Iran .

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia burnettii are for the Haplont Hornmelden ( Krascheninnikovia spp.) And Oryzopsis hymenoides and various Stipa species for the Dikaryonten . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a development cycle with Telien, Uredien, Spermogonia and Aecien and changes host.
