Puccinia chaetochloae is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of Ixophorus unisetus , Paspalum , Pennisetum spicatum and millet . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. The distribution area includes the tropical and subtropical America.
features
Macroscopic features
Puccinia chaetochloae can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Puccinia chaetochloae grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Spermogonia or aecidia are not known. The uredia grow on both sides and are long covered by the epidermis . Their uredospores are elongated to ovate, 30–42 × 22–28 µm in size, brown and finely spiky. The parts of the species are black and covered by the epidermis. The teleutospores are two-celled, club-shaped to ellipsoid and 32–40 × 20–26 µm in size; its stem is 25 µm long and golden yellow.
distribution
The distribution area of Puccinia chaetochloae covers an area that extends from the southern USA to Brazil .
ecology
The host plants of Puccinia chaetochloae are Ixophorus unisetus , Paspalum spp., Pennisetum spicatum, and millet ( Setaria spp.). The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a development cycle with Telien and Uredien, Spermogonia and Aecidien absent.
