Puccinia hilariae is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the sweet grass Hilaria hintonii . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. She is endemic to Mexico .

Macroscopic features

Puccinia hilariae can only be recognized with the naked eye from the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia hilariae grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Aecia or spermogonia of the species are not known, the same applies to the uredia of the fungus. Their hyaline uredospores are 17–19 × 14–18  µm in size, spherical to broadly ovate and finely spiky. The parts of the species growing on both sides or mainly on the upper side of the leaves are black-brown, powdery and exposed early. The hazelnut brown teliospores are two-celled, sometimes septate at an angle, broadly ellipsoidal and 28–35 × 22–25 µm in size. The stem is colorless and 110 µm long.

The known distribution area of Puccinia hilariae only includes Mexico .

ecology

The host plant of Puccinia hilariae is Hilaria hintonii . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a development cycle of which only Telien and Uredien and their host are known; Spermogonia and aecia could not be assigned to the fungus.
