Puccinia moriokaensis is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the Phragmites species. Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in eastern Asia .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia moriokaensis can only be recognized with the naked eye by the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia moriokaensis grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Aecia or spermogonia of the species are not known; the same applies to the uredia of the mushroom. Their yellowish-brown uredospores are ovate to ellipsoidal, 24–30 × 16–20 µm in size and finely spiky. The bilateral, mostly underside, growing parts of the species are black-brown, exposed early and compact. The hazelnut-brown teliospores are two-celled, usually ovoid to narrow ellipsoid and 46–70 × 16–21 µm in size; their stalk is brownish and up to 150 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia moriokaensis includes eastern Russia , China and Japan .

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia moriokaensis are various Phragmites species. The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a development cycle of which only Telien and their host are known; Uredien, Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to the fungus.
