Puccinia nuda is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the daisy family Calcadenia , Madia , Lagophylla and Hemizonia . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It occurs in large parts of America.

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia nuda can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds emerging on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia nuda grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are unknown. The uredia of the fungus growing on both sides of the host leaves are cinnamon brown. Their golden-brown uredospores are 25–30 × 25–28 µm in size, mostly spherical and spiky. The bilateral growing parts of the species are black-brown, compact and uncovered. The deep golden to chestnut brown teliospores are two-celled, usually ovoid to ellipsoid and 40–50 × 22–28 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 100 µm long.

distribution

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia nuda are various Calcadenia , Madia , Lagophylla and Hemizonia species. The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle of which only Telien and Uredien and their host are known so far; Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.
