Puccinia similis is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the sunflower genera Artemisia and Tanacetum . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in the western United States .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia similis can only be recognized with the naked eye by the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia similis grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are unknown. The uredia growing on both sides of the mushroom are cinnamon brown. Their light cinnamon or golden brown uredospores are 28–35 × 23–26 µm in size, mostly ovate to broadly ellipsoidal and spiky. The branches of the species growing on both sides and on stems are black-brown, compact and uncovered, they have golden paraphyses. The deep golden to clear maroon teliospores are two-celled, usually long ellipsoid and 44–56 × 23–28 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 175 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia similis extends from New Mexico and North Dakota to the US Pacific coast.

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia similis are various Artemisia and Tanacetum species. The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle of which only Telien and Uredien and their host are known so far; Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.
