Alt-Köpenick is the oldest street in today's Berlin district of Köpenick . It was laid out towards the end of the 12th century when the Coepnick settlement was founded as the only street for the first residents of the service settlement of Köpenick Castle and for immigrants. That is why it was first called Schlossstrasse . In the centuries that followed, the street underwent some changes both in its course and in the development and was given new names. The current street layout extends from Schlossplatz / Grünstraße or the Long Bridge parallel to the Dahme northwards to the Dammbrücke . It can only be used continuously for trams, the southern section is in a pedestrian zone .
history
It was not until after 1300, when the settlement had to be expanded eastwards, that the street was lengthened accordingly and the new section was named Marktplatz .
The Brandenburg Elector Friedrich Wilhelm ordered the straightening and widening of the street around 1670. After this was completed around 1700 and a castle driveway was also built, the traffic route was given the name Breite Straße , which was valid until the 18th century. The square in front of the driveway officially became Schloßplatz . In the 18th century, the entire length of the street was named Schloßstraße . During the National Socialist era , the name was changed to Litzmanndamm and Litzmannplatz after General Karl Litzmann (1850-1936). These names were undesirable after the end of World War II . The new employees of the district administration named the street and the square after Max Betcke (1868–1944), worker and Köpenick city councilor (1906–1908), unpaid city councilor (1919–1922) and Berlin city elder (1924). This street name was not confirmed by the Berlin magistrate in 1947. Instead, the current name was determined, which also includes the square. The name Alt-Köpenick became official on July 31, 1947.
The promenade in Luisenhain, which runs parallel to Alt-Köpenick, was expanded in the 2000s.
Buildings and more
The house numbers 6, 8 (see picture), 10 and 15 are among the oldest houses from the mid-18th century.
Most of the residential buildings on this street date from the 19th century and despite some renovations have been listed as historical monuments since the 1980s. These are both two-story buildings with baroque substance and four -story stone buildings in the Wilhelminian style .
Then there is the Köpenick Town Hall (Alt-Köpenick 21, since the district merger the Bürgeramt I) and the St. Laurentius City Church . In keeping with the listed buildings, the historic cobblestones have been retained to the right and left of the tram tracks .
Approximately in the middle of the street, on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of Köpenick (2009), a model of the historic old town was set up at the town hall.
For many years, Alt-Köpenick has served as an event location for the Köpenick summer up to the Schlossplatz including the Schlossinsel and in December for a Christmas market that focuses primarily on handicrafts and regional offers.
Two bronze sculptures in this street should not go unmentioned - the life-size replica of the shoemaker Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt, who went down in world history as Captain von Köpenick , is right at the entrance to the town hall . A pair of wild horses from the workshop of the Berlin artist group “Inges idee” were set up on the Schlossplatz and are modeled on the animals of the numerous equestrian monuments of rulers. They certainly also refer to the riders who lived in the castle in earlier centuries.
At number Alt-Köpenick 31, behind a small entrance, is the Schlossplatztheater , which offers chamber music arrangements of older operas and premieres of new operas and music theaters.
