Puccinia stromatifera is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the daisy family Perezia nudicaulis . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in northwestern Mexico .
features
Macroscopic features
Puccinia stromatifera can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Puccinia stromatifera grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are unknown, the same applies to the uredia of the fungus and their uredospores. The telia of the species growing on both sides of the host leaves are black and covered, they are in dense groups and have brown paraphyses . The clear maroon teliospores are two-celled, usually spindle-shaped to long-ellipsoidal and 45–55 × 16–20 µm in size. Their stem is brownish and up to 25 µm long.
distribution
The known distribution area of Puccinia stromatifera includes the Mexican states of Baja California Sur and Chiapas .
ecology
The host plant of Puccinia stromatifera is Perezia nudicaulis . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle, of which only Telien and their host are known; Uredien, Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.
Taxonomy
The species was first described in 1972 by Hennen , Hector M. León-Gallegos and George Baker Cummins .
