The Powder Tower in Andernach is a tower of erzstiftlich- Electoral Cologne Castle to Andernach and at the same time fortified tower of the city wall . In 1519, at the behest of Cologne Archbishop and Elector Hermann V von Wied, it was added to the south side of the palace to expand and reinforce the 300-year-old city castle and city wall , thus marking the south-west corner of the Electorate of Cologne.

The now 18 m tower has an approximately 13 m tall, cylindrical, three-story core structure of approximately 12 m in diameter with circumferential trefoil - Fries of tuff approximately 1.60 m below the helmet rim. Another arched frieze runs at floor level, below which the outer wall is drawn in by approx. 30 cm at a height of 1.50 m, and then jumps outwards again 20 cm. This area on the tower base below the ground level was the tower-side moat wall in this area. The inclination of the original helmet of the tower is unknown, but according to the medieval style it should have been significantly steeper and higher. After the destruction in 1689, it stood as a roofless ruin for almost 300 years. In 1980/1981 a number of renovation work was carried out, particularly on the eight defensive towers of the city wall, which also included renewing the powder tower . The destroyed outer tower wall was bricked up, and a new, slate-covered conical helmet with a tower ball was put on in 1981. Besides the keep, the tower is the only intact building in the Electoral Cologne water castle .
