The Puning Temple or Temple of Universal Peace or the Puning Monastery ( Chinese  普宁寺 , Pinyin Pǔníng sì , English Puning Temple / Temple of Universal Peace ) is one of the Eight Outer Temples in Chengde (Jehol) in the Chinese province of Hebei . The Buddhist monastery is located in the north of the park complex of the Summer Palace on the bank of the Wulie River . Because of the large gold lacquer wooden statue of Guanyin - Bodhisattva in his Mahayana Pavilion ( Dasheng ge ) it is also Big Buddha Temple called.

The temple was built in the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty from 1755 to 1758 and is partly a replica of the Tibetan Samye monastery . It is built in the style of the Han Chinese and Tibetans . The facility covers an area of ​​23,000 square meters. Important buildings are its halls or pavilions Tianwang dian (Hall of the Kings of Heaven ), Daxiong baodian ( Mahavira Hall), Dasheng ge (Mahayana pavilion) and Beiting (plaque pavilion).

The Mahayana Pavilion ( Dasheng ge ) with its three storeys and six eaves is 36.75 m high, the statue of the thousand-armed Guanyin (Avalokiteśvara) inside is 22.23 m high, it is one of the largest wooden sculptures in China. In the memorial pavilion ( Beiting ) there are carved inscriptions in four languages ​​in Manchurian , Chinese , Mongolian and Tibetan script , which remind of the defeat of the Djungars by Qianlong in the Djungarian war in the Ili (Chinese: Yili ) area of Xinjiang in the 1750s.

The Puning Temple ( Puning si ) has been on the List of Monuments of the People's Republic of China (1-115) and on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1961 . It is one of the national focus temples of Buddhism in Han Chinese areas .
